From Locals to Landmarks

Alex & David’s European Vacation

For the last seven years, Alex and I have dreamt about quitting our jobs and spending months traveling across Europe. Over time it started to feel like nothing more than a pipe dream, with the realities and responsibilities of everyday life taking over. But now as we prepare to leave Seattle and move across the country to Virginia, it feels like the perfect time to make our dream a reality.

This trip is the culmination of years of conversations and what-ifs, and is a chance to not only embrace the adventure and change that lies ahead of us, but a chance to create memories that will last a lifetime.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!

The Journey Ahead

We’ve divided our trip into two parts—Europe and the United Kingdom—with a 90/30-day split between the regions.

Because the UK tends to be colder in general, we decided to save it for later in the trip and closer to summer so that we’d have the best chance at good weather.

Also, our time in Europe is capped at 90 days because of the Schengen Border Agreement. If you’re unfamiliar, this is an agreement between most European countries which allows citizens to move freely between each country without border checks—this “borderless” zone is known as the Schengen Area. As non-EU citizens, we can travel within the area for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.

Fortunately for us, the UK isn’t part of the Schengen Area, so we’re able to stay as long as we want! (Technically the limit is 180 days, but we only plan to stay for about a month, so it won’t be an issue lol)
